Unique to South East Asia with 7,000 islands and 100 million people, the Philippines is an outpost of the West strongly influenced over the years by Spain and America. It’s a tragic place, a wild-west society having inherited the worst features of our ‘civilisation’ and leaving much of its people being exploited and in poverty.
While overwhelmingly Catholic (of the conservative brand mixed with pagan elements), it is also full of weird churches and sects. The Lutheran Church there is 60 years old but has many problems and has been declining. At the end of 2014, AFA initiated ‘Philippine Lutheran Mission’ (PLM) as a renewal and mission movement.
Pastor Larry de Guzman is the only minister helping the Dumagat tribal people in the Ipo Dam area. He has now trained two other evangelists to assist him in his work and together they teach and help these mountain people…

2018 was as eventful, wonderful as well as stressful as every other year if not more so – with plenty of drama and pain mixed in as well. Overall the number of donors and interest in AFA keeps growing. But like the LCA itself, we are also suffering from the effects of a declining church as people age and die or join other churches and stop to support Lutheran-based mission work.
In the face of declining mission activities in local Lutheran churches, declining church attendance and increasing focus on ritual and ceremony, it had been decided to establish this group to focus on winning people for Christ and to establish new congregations and mission centres particularly in the greater Manila area among the native people and in Benguet in Northern Luzon.
Challenging, provocative thoughts written with much love about the state of many Lutheran churches in the Philippines (and Australia?).
A Catholic country, yet also a pagan country (like Australia?), mission in the Philippines is hard. There is a Lutheran Church present but it is small, village based and seems to be shrinking with its ultra-conservative worship.
